New this year is an expanded Gallery and Exhibit Walk, which includes vendors, Funder Office Hours, Ask an Expert, an update on the GIS mapping application, interactive engagement activities and more!
Our conference will open with a keynote address from OpinionWorks’ Steve Raabe detailing the results of a recent Bay-wide survey of citizen stewardship behaviors. Steve will unpack trends across the watershed and give a glimpse of how citizens in Anne Arundel County compare.

LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS: Natural History Society of Maryland Spring and Summer Programs

The Natural History Society of Maryland is looking for program volunteers for the coming spring and summer seasons.
NHSM is a mostly volunteer-led non-profit organization dedicated to making the wonders of the natural world accessible to every Marylander! We offer a wide-range of public programs including fossil collecting trips, guided nature hikes, lectures, and science cafes (located all around Maryland but mostly in the Baltimore area). Please check out our Facebook page and Meetup page for future and past programs. There are many more future programs to come so stay posted!
We are looking for volunteers to assist in the running of these programs. Duties would include: signing in participants, making sure presenter/leader stays on schedule, set-up/clean-up, etc. No prior experience is necessary! Volunteers would get to participate in the program for free too!

MICA Art Course (10 Sessions) at NHSM: The Artist as Naturalist; Drawing in Color
The Natural History Society of Maryland is so excited to be hosting a MICA community education course!
“Nature always wears the colors of the spirit,” wrote Emerson. Students in this course, which is suitable for all levels, use colored drawing media such as pencils, markers, watercolor pencils, and ink to draw specimens from the outstanding collection of the Natural History Society of Maryland, which includes beautiful gems, minerals, plants, fossils, seashells and coral, as well as preserved insects, butterflies and moths, reptiles, birds and mammals. On site at NHSM, participants embark on extended projects focused on different aspects of the collection, spending time to closely observe, study and render a variety of fascinating natural forms. Consideration will be given to properties of wet and dry media, mark-making, composition, and the incorporation of text. In addition, students learn how to observe the interaction of color in nature, organize a palette, and establish successful color relationships in their compositions, using layering and blending. Outside of class, students keep weekly nature journals to supplement their inquiry into the natural world.
Instructor: David Little (MICA ’83, General Fine Arts B.F.A.) is a recipient of the Henry Walter Travelling Fellowship, the Baltimore City Art Grant and the Maryland State Arts Council Grant. His artwork features figurative elements on a large scale using a variety of drawing media, including pastels.

In 2014, CBF opened the Brock Environmental Center in Virginia Beach; the Brock Center is the tenth certified Living Building and one of the most energy efficient, environmentally smart buildings in the world.
CBF Environmental Education
Approximately 35,000 students and teachers participate each year in CBF’s education field experiences or teacher professional learning.
The Bay, and its watershed, is our classroom and CBF environmental educators are responsible for bringing the Bay alive to students. We strive to make a lasting impression about the excitement and vulnerability of the Bay.
Each of CBF’s 15 education programs has its own individual character. The field experience options run the gamut from our urban boat programs in Baltimore and Hampton Roads to Pennsylvania canoe programs to remote island-based centers. We use hands-on experiential teaching techniques to educate students about the health of the Bay and connect them back to their local environment. Educators promote and develop citizen knowledge about the Bay by providing unforgettable, hands-on, student lead experiences that inspire them with a commitment to take action for the restoration of the Bay.
The education department is comprised of Student Field Programs, Teacher and Principal Professional Learning, and Student Leadership. All of these components work closely to educate and empower students to take action towards “Saving the Bay.”
CONTEXT OF THE POSITION
The seasonal educators will live and work at one of the following centers:
The Fox Island Education Center is located on a remote salt marsh island in the lower Chesapeake Bay, where the Tangier and Pocomoke Sounds converge. The island is compromised completely of tidal salt marsh, with no trees or high ground. This center provides participants access to some of the Bay’s most pristine areas. Two hundred and forty-five acres of unspoiled marshland and surrounding water that teem with life provide opportunities for exploration by foot, canoe and workboat. Access to Fox Island requires a 45-minute boat trip from Crisfield, MD (pop. 2,500). Built in 1929 as a hunting and fishing lodge, the center operates a residential program for 6th – 12th grade students and teachers. This rustic education center houses up to 24 people and is the only structure on an uninhabited island. The lodge’s location, history and simple nature make it a truly magical experience for students and teachers. The full-time, on-site staff consists of a Program Manager, Captain, and seasonal educator who are all responsible for conducting all field experiences.
The Smith Island Education Center is located in Tylerton, Maryland, the largest inhabited offshore island in the Bay. It is an 8-mile x 4-mile island consisting primarily of virgin estuarine marsh crisscrossed by a maze of guts, creeks, and thoroughfares. The three island communities have a total population of 300 people. CBF owns two houses in the community of Tylerton, from which we operate a residential environmental education center for groups of up to 30 students and/or adults. The center incorporates canoes, a skiff, and a 40-foot workboat into the program. The full-time, on-site staff consists of a Program Manager, Assistant Manager, and Captain who are all responsible for conducting all field experiences.
The Karen Noonan Memorial Environmental Education Center is situated on 20 acres of marsh in southern Dorchester County, Maryland. Participants explore pine forests, underwater grass beds, and native oyster reefs that surround the center. The nearby Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, one of the largest tidal wetlands on the East Coast, also provides opportunities from which to investigate this ecosystem. Once one of the great Chesapeake hunting lodges, the Karen Noonan Center was completely renovated in 1995 to create an environmentally sound, state-of-the-art residential center. Participants in our program can see how a “green building” can function not only as a learning tool but as a home. The center has a 40-foot workboat, canoes, a pier, and approximately 100 feet of beachfront. The full-time, on-site staff consists of a Program Manager, Captain, and seasonal educator who are all responsible for conducting all field experiences.
The Port Isobel Education Center is a 250-acre island that is situated in the heart of the Tangier Island archipelago. The island showcases a variety of estuarine habitats such as: marshes, a pine forest, and a ¼ mile beach. The program serves 6th-12th grade students, teachers, and other adult groups. The program is focused on understanding the delicate relationship between the ecosystem and the watermen community of Tangier. There is also a pier, 42-foot workboat and a fleet of canoes that are used with all participants. The center utilizes a dormitory, a dining/meeting hall, and staff housing. The full-time, on-site staff consists of a Program Manager, Captain, and seasonal educator who are all responsible for conducting all field experiences.
Ability to live and work at one of CBF’s residential centers and lead three-day, two-night field experiences for school groups, grades 6-12th typically, and adults
Assist in planning and teaching three-day ecology and environmental science field experiences for school aged groups (grades 6-12 typically) and adults
Assist program staff with routine maintenance, upkeep, cleaning, and projects in compliance with Education Center safety checklists
Ensure safe learning environment for participants
Create a fun, experiential environment for all participants
Understand and convey the mission of the Foundation
Be a role model for students and participants
Develop and maintain education materials
Work as a team within the individual field program and the education department
This physically-demanding position involves frequent weekend work & year-round exposure to the elements
Housing is provided and the Seasonal Educator must live on-site for the duration of the term
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
Successful Candidate should possess the following:
Bachelor’s degree in education, environmental science, biology, environmental studies, or related field, or relevant experience required
Experience teaching in either a formal or non-formal setting, preferred
A strong desire to teach in the field/outdoors (under all weather conditions) and work with students on a daily basis
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills while working with participants of all ages and with co-workers
Collaborative work style
Energy, enthusiasm, and passion for working with students and teaching about the environment
Creativity, humor and self-confidence
Desire and ability to relate to people of all ages and backgrounds
Knowledge of environmental issues facing the Bay
Experience on boats & boater safety certification, preferred

The water quality benefits of forests are widely accepted, yet very few studies have successfully quantified the runoff and pollutant-reducing impacts of trees in the urban landscape. Uncertainty as to how to “credit” urban trees – everything from individual street trees up to small patches of forest – for runoff and pollutant load reduction has hampered their use as a stormwater best management practice (BMP). In this webinar, Karen Cappiella and Justin Hynicka will review the available stormwater crediting systems for urban tree planting and will present a new crediting system that can be integrated into state and local compliance systems for stormwater management, Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs), and other water quality requirements. The presenters will share a case study example of how this crediting framework has been formally adopted by state and federal agencies as part of the Chesapeake Bay TMDL, which covers 64,000 square miles across six states and DC.
This project was made possible in part by funding from the USDA Forest Service National Urban and Community Forestry Challenge Cost-Share Grant program. The National Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council (NUCFAC) sets the categories for this grant program based on the Ten-Year Urban Forestry Action Plan and recommends to the Forest Service innovative urban and community forestry research and projects that should be considered for funding.

The Chesapeake Bay Trust Green Streets, Green Jobs, Green Towns (G3) Grant Program is now open!
The Chesapeake Bay Green Streets-Green Jobs-Green Towns (G3) Grant Program funded by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Region III (EPA), Chesapeake Bay Trust (Trust), and the City of Baltimore Office of Sustainability with support from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, welcomes requests for urban green infrastructure proposals. The goal of the Chesapeake Bay G3 Grant Program is to help communities develop and implement plans that reduce stormwater runoff, increase the number and amount of green spaces in urban areas, improve the health of local streams and the Chesapeake Bay, and enhance quality of life and community livability.
This collaborative effort provides support for local, grassroots-level greening efforts to reduce stormwater runoff from towns and communities in urbanized watersheds. By focusing on “green streets” communities can develop and realize a green vision to design-build and operate and maintain green infrastructure stormwater practices. Green Streets anchor communities and serve as a catalyst for the integration of green practices that support green schools, greening of urban vacant lots, increasing urban tree canopy, and reducing impervious surfaces to improve natural infrastructure. All communities in Maryland and throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed portions of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., West Virginia, and Virginia are eligible to apply.
Up to $15,000 for conceptual plans, $30,000 for engineered designs, $75,000 for implementation projects, and $20,000 for white papers may be requested for this grant program. If selected, charrette applicants will receive technical assistance rather than direct funding.
Deadline: March 16th, 2018 at 4 pm.

Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park Summer Camp Intern
The Annapolis Maritime Museum annually serves more than 8,000 students. We aim to help construct a connection between people and the environment by leading hands-on activities that foster positive outdoor experiences and help stimulate critical thinking. These experiences can help establish a foundation for future sustainable environmental decision making.
The Education Center at the Annapolis Maritime Museum seeks summer interns to assist with our summer camp, including before and after care. The Summer Camp Intern position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about leading youth, possess a love for the outdoors, and have prior summer camp experience. Successful interns will be energetic, motivated, responsible, and ready to have fun!
Participating interns will gain:
Experience in environmental education and curriculum development
Knowledge of Chesapeake Bay history, ecology, and maritime culture
Communication and leadership skills including the confidence and knowledge to guide other volunteers and interns
Assist with all aspects of AMM’s day camps (K-7th grade), including child supervision, daily set up and clean up, and program material management
Organize, co-teach, and teach a variety of group activities: crafts, outdoor exploration, games, kayaking, etc.
Aid in the development of hands-on environmental education lessons
Ensure the site is kept clean, organized, and free of litter
Communicate with Lead Staff regarding concerns, challenges, and camper experiences
Assist in maintaining accurate program records including health logs and daily attendance
Ensure children’s safety, manage behavior, and act as a role model and mentor
Skills and Qualifications:
One year of undergraduate study. Biology, Environmental Studies, Education, History or related field preferred
Demonstrated experience working with children
High energy and enthusiasm
Flexibility and the ability to problem solve
Strong organizational and time management skills
Willingness to work outside in all weather conditions
Ability to lift at least 15 pounds
CPR/First Aid Certification preferred

Purpose: Reporting to Canaan Valley Institute’s Board of Directors, the executive director (ED) has overall strategic and operational responsibility for CVI’s staff, programs, and execution of its mission. Ensure that the Conservancy’s activities help achieve the goals and key performance indicators set forth in our strategic plan.
Serve as the spokesperson and public face of Rock Creek Conservancy to the media, legislators, volunteers, members, donors, and partners.
Maintain and deepen a collaborative and strategic partnership with the National Park Service, Rock Creek Park, Montgomery County Parks, as well as other relevant governmental organizations.
Serve as an inspiring and innovative leader and convener of environmental/parks organizations in the Rock Creek watershed by developing and promoting shared goals.
Implement a communications strategy that will increase the visibility of Rock Creek Conservancy and its issues.
Ensure that the Conservancy recognizes and serves a diverse population, reflecting the highly diverse communities adjacent to Rock Creek Park and in the Rock Creek Watershed.
Manage the day-to-day operations of the organization, including responsibility for financial systems and working with the financial consultants and auditor.
Attract and retain talented staff to carry out the organization’s programs, fundraising, and communications.
Manage the Conservancy’s staff, and in particular the ED’s direct reports across the organization’s primary functional areas.
Support an engaged board of directors as it carries out its fiduciary and governance responsibilities.
Desired Skills, Experience, and Personal Characteristics
To be successful, the executive director should be:
Passionate about the mission of Rock Creek Conservancy, with strong professional experience in the environment, conservation, parks, or a related field.
An excellent communicator who can both inspire and establish credibility with donors, government officials, leaders of other conservation organizations, the media, the staff, the board, and others.
Able to think strategically and programmatically in setting priorities, allocating resources, providing follow-through, and evaluating efforts.
Personally experienced in fundraising from individuals, foundations, federal and local governments, and corporations.
Knowledgeable about nonprofit management, including best practices in financial management, program management, staff development, and board development.
Familiar with advocacy and public policy formulation, at the state and county levels of government.

Nature Center Facility Leader I- Robinson Nature Center
Howard County Recreation and Parks operates the Robinson Nature Center. This position performs intermediate level recreation services work ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the Center. This position provides support to the Facility Leader II and to full-time staff of the Center. This position will work closely with the Program Manager for assistance with program marketing including Facebook posts, flyers, posters, and other duties as assigned. This position will assist in providing customer service and support for center operations. Center hours are Wednesday-Sunday; weekend and occasional evening work is required. This positions is 37.5 hr/week, year-round and non-benefited.
Assist with ActiveNet membership, entering seasonal programs and program registration
Performs opening and closing duties as assigned
Greet all visitors, directs guests around the Center based on their interests or purpose for visiting
Daily monitoring of Center voicemail and directing messages to appropriate party
Makes phone calls as directed contacting participants with cancellations, program updates and maintains program wait lists. Performs refunds when necessary.
Set up and take down of equipment for non-package rentals
Create and maintain permits for Naturalist Birthday Party rentals
Answers a multi-line phone and directs calls to the appropriate coordinator

Provides marketing and program promotion to walk in customers. Create small flyers with event information and keep whiteboards up to date.

Assists with Touch Tank maintenance and Touch Tank public hours when needed

The Chesapeake Watershed Semester is a unique opportunity for highly motivated high school juniors or seniors to join a talented community of learners who will immerse themselves in the study and restoration of the Chesapeake Bay for one semester. Through dynamic and diverse field-study Expeditions, students travel the region meeting with stakeholders and conducting research. From our waterfront campus, students take honors and AP level classes while maintaining an intense, hands-on engagement with the natural environment.
ENVIRONMENTAL HUMANITIES: GOVERNMENT/ENGLISH TEACHER POSITION:
We seek a dynamic, energetic, and student-centered lead teacher to help launch the new Chesapeake Watershed Semester. The primary responsibilities of the position include teaching two courses, American Government Seminar and Literature of the Land and Water during the fall “experiential” semester, and environmental humanities electives for The Gunston School during the spring semester. We seek candidates who can utilize an array of experiential and student-centered instructional strategies that promote both rigorous intellectual thinking and meaningful engagement. As one of two lead teachers for the fall program, we seek individuals with strong organizational management skills, willingness to tackle projects large and small, creativity, flexibility, and a passion for both the environment and the humanities.
Candidates applying for teaching positions should have at least ONE of the following academic qualifications:
Undergraduate or Master’s degree in a relevant content area (i.e. English, Political Science, Environmental Studies)
2+ years teaching experience preferred
Additionally, candidates should possess advanced technical skills and be able to lead in at least ONE of the following activity areas:
Open water kayaking
Small craft boating
Backpacking (5-6 days in remote locations)
This is a paid, annual position with the opportunity for contract extensions each year. The teacher will have residential life and expedition duties during the fall Chesapeake Watershed Semester. During the pilot year, 2018-2019, the Chesapeake Watershed Semester will only run in the fall semester. Teachers applying for this position will teach at our parent institution, The Gunston School, during the spring semester.

NHSM 6 Session Course on Understanding Weather and Climate with Martin Schmidt
Please join us for a fantastic 6 session course about climate and weather with Martin Schmidt this spring! This is a perfect course for beginners.
We’re immersed in the weather all the time. This class will help you observe and make sense of what’s happening around us. Weather forecasts abound, but when we look for patterns in our everyday weather we can understand the processes underlying those forecasts.
During these six classes we’ll look at many sources of information we have today–from local to global. After examining the systems that create our usual daily weather, we’ll look at extremes like thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes to see how they form, grow, and dissipate. And, of course, we will look at what science says is happening in regard to climate change, including what to expect and what actions the data indicate are needed.
Some of the specific topics that will be covered include:
Weather features, how they are measured, and what they tell us
Sources of weather data and forecasts, and how to examine patterns in data.
Global atmospheric circulation patterns and seasons
How high and low pressure systems create everyday weather
Weather extremes and being prepared for them
Climate – what it has been, what influences it, how it’s changing now

Martin Schmidt has been teaching grades 9-12 at McDonogh School since 1978, including physics, chemistry, and geosciences over the years. He is author of the book, Maryland’s Geology, published by Schiffer Publishers, which is designed to give a basic geologic background & then apply it to the state, for students, teachers, and laymen. He feels fortunate to have been able to travel to the Andes, the Alps, & the Himalayas, and finds it fascinating to see the variety and similarity of geologic features around the world. He loves maps and can play around with GIS for hours. Lately he’s been filling his calendar talking to naturalists, teachers, citizens, and park rangers about Maryland geology, and enjoys sharing that information. And besides looking down at the rocks, he’s just as watchful looking up at the weather and the stars, as he finds all of Earth science absorbing!

In this richly illustrated lecture, Jenny Rose Carey, Director of Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Meadowbrook Farm, presents the delights and benefits of gardening in shade using her favorite native plants. She provides design ideas for personalizing your own shade garden and making it a peaceful retreat for you, your friends, and visiting wildlife. Tips and techniques specific to gardening in shade round out this presentation.
Copies of Jenny Rose’s book, Glorious Shade, will be available for purchase and signing after the lecture.
Jenny Rose Carey was born into a family of gardeners and botanists and is an avid, handson horticulturist. Her property, Northview, serves as her living laboratory and includes a shade garden, moss garden, and stumpery. Her recently published book, Glorious Shade (Timber Press, 2017), is a practical guide to all aspects of shade gardening, including a rich plant palette and a calendar of seasonal tasks. Jenny Rose and her gardens have been featured on the PBS series The Victory Garden, and in The Wall Street Journal, Philadelphia Inquirer, and Pennsylvania Gardener.
