    Environmental Management Career Development Program Appointment

    Restoration of the Chesapeake Bay requires committed, diverse, passionate individuals and the Chesapeake Research Consortium (CRC) seeks such an individual for a three-year appointment to the Chesapeake Bay Program’s Protect and Restore Vital Habitat Goal Implementation Team.  The purpose of the goal team is to facilitate projects to protect, restore, and enhance fish and wildlife habitats across the Chesapeake Bay watershed by coordinating efforts of partners of the Chesapeake Bay Program. These habitats include tidal and non-tidal wetlands, living shorelines, submerged aquatic vegetation, islands, uplands and forests, and freshwater streams. In addition to staffing the goal team, this position also supports the Wetland Workgroup, SAV Workgroup, Fish Passage Workgroup, Stream Health Workgroup, Mid-Atlantic Panel on Aquatic Invasive Species, Brook Trout Action Team and Black Duck Action Team.

    The candidate selected for this position will be involved in team activities and will be responsible for organization and support of meetings, member coordination and communication, task tracking, and research and synthesis activities, including reporting on performance indicators.  The Staffer for the goal team should expect to engage in work such as drafting policy pieces, workplans, indicators and decision support documents, and will gain experience in working with natural resource managers from around the Chesapeake Bay.  The selected candidate will work as a CRC employee at the U.S. EPA’s Chesapeake Bay Program Office located in Annapolis, Maryland.

    The ideal candidate for the position would have the following background and qualifications.

    Bachelor’s degree with a focus on environmental management or policy, candidates with natural or environmental science, fisheries, wildlife, forestry or conservation biology degrees are also eligible to apply if those applicants have an interest in management and policy.
    Knowledge of ecosystem management concepts including its physical, biological and economic components as they relate to a large watershed restoration program is also desirable.
    Knowledge of the Chesapeake Bay Total Maximun Daily Load (TMDL) and Best Management Practice (BMP) protocol to include BMP establishment, framework, and verification.
    Ability to compile, track and assess environmental and natural resource data a plus.
    Ability to perform background research, analysis, and synthesis on policy and science related topics.
    Ability to work with people in a consensus building environment and independently plan meetings, develop agendas, and draft concise meeting minutes.
    Ability to prioritize tasks under tight timelines in a fast-paced environment.
    Demonstrated ability to problem-solve.
    Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
    Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate with partners at all levels of program activities with diplomacy.
    Ability to manage and update content for group web pages using a content management system.
    Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required.  Experience with Microsoft Access is a plus.
    Familiarity with remote technologies such as video conferencing (Web-X, Adobe connect, etc.).
    Basic knowledge and application of GIS a plus.
    Interest in learning how a multi-party, governmental-environmental-management partnership makes decisions effectively and sets and achieves goals through collaborative processes.

    Communications Intern

    The Chesapeake Bay Trust, a non-profit grant-making organization that promotes public participation in the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, seeks a communications intern for the fall and spring semesters 2017-2018 for approximately 8-10 hours per week. This position will play an important role in assisting with the Trust’s communications needs as well as with the management of donor information and outreach.

    In particular the communications intern will assist with data entry, web content creation and management, newsletter production, email list management, database management, fundraising efforts, and events.


    Reports to the Trust’s Director of Development and Marketing and works closely with the rest of staff to assure the organization’s mission, programs, awards, and grants are properly communicated, and promoted to the public.
    Assists with the Trust’s database including segmentation, solicitation follow-up and donor recognition.
    Assists with outreach efforts and entering appropriate information from new supporters into database.
    Assists with updating and maintaining the Trust’s two websites as well as edits and designs the Trust’s two e-newsletters.
    Assists with media outreach and events, including public relations efforts and on-site activities, as well as tracks media coverage.
    Assists with fundraising appeal tracking and list segmentation.
    Assists with the Trust’s major events throughout the year, including marketing of the events, attendee tracking, and day of on-site logistics.

    Skills and Qualifications

    Attention to detail is absolutely critical; the right candidate must be an exceptionally thorough proofreader and editor.
    Experience with web and email communications tools required; experience with new media technologies, such as blogs and online social media required.
    An undergraduate or graduate degree-seeking student in marketing, journalism, communications or related field is preferred. Alternatively, students majoring in other fields must have significant experience in communications or marketing.
    Knowledge of environment, sustainability, and community engagement issues desired.
    Strong writing, graphic design, media outreach, and/or web content production and management experience is preferred.
    Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively with deadlines is required.
    Strong computer literacy is essential: MS Office; Access (or similar database); Adobe (Photoshop); familiarity with content management systems a plus.
    Some travel required (statewide), with some evening and weekend hours required.
    Willingness to commit to 8-10 hours weekly for the Fall and Spring semesters for the 2017-2018 school year (can be one day or broken into days) required.

    A new Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional (CBLP) Level 1 certification class has been added in Montgomery County, MD, on September 14-15, 2017. Apply for certification online:

    CBLP is a new certification for professionals who design, install or maintain sustainable landscapes.  Level 1 training consists of a two-day class that combines classroom learning about conservation landscaping and stormwater best management practices, with a field-based maintenance practicum. CBLP’s active learning program focuses on critical thinking, problem solving, and collaborative practice.

    Because CBLP is a Bay-wide certification, candidates may attend class and sit for the exam in any location. Level 1 certification exams will be given in multiple locations in MD, VA, and PA, August 2017-January 2018.

    Chesapeake Conservancy, based in Annapolis, Maryland, is a small, dynamic nonprofit organization that works to conserve and restore the Chesapeake’s national parks and trails, and connects people to the watershed’s cultural heritage and natural resources.  We integrate technology, innovative thinking, and collaborative approaches to solve conservation challenges in the region and deliver results.

    Applications are now being accepted for the Conservancy’s next Vice President & Director of Programs.  This experienced, results-oriented individual will have an extensive conservation background to plan, develop, and implement a variety of partnership-based, shared-resource programs focused on protecting, interpreting, and enjoying the natural and cultural heritage resources associated with the Chesapeake’s national parks and trails, primarily the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail.

    A strong, senior-level leader with exceptional interpersonal skills, the Vice President & Director of Programs will routinely display energy and professionalism in a collaborative manner, develop and lead park-based resource conservation, recreational/heritage tourism, and drive educational and interpretive programming in close coordination with partners in the Chesapeake region, including the National Park Service, the Conservancy’s primary partner on the development of the trail.

    Candidates must have at least five or more years of program management experience, with proven success in employee and program development.  A consensus-builder leadership style is essential, with a successful track record of creating and fostering a team environment.

    The ideal candidate will have a master’s degree preferably in natural resources management; recreation or conservation planning; historic preservation; or similarly related field.  Special consideration will be given to candidates who also have a master’s degree or equivalent knowledge in business, economic development, and/or environmental policy.  Specific experience in at least two of the following areas is a plus:

    Cultural or heritage tourism
    Natural resources management and conservation
    Historic preservation

    Successful candidates will have demonstrated experience coordinating partnerships with state or federal agencies, and the proven ability to interact with executive directors, program directors, development staff, funders, and boards of directors.  Experience with Cooperative Associations or Friends Groups (associated with national parks or related public land agencies), or in a leadership role within a formal partnership with a state or federal agency is considered a plus.

    Candidates must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, develop and articulate strategic direction, create programs aimed at strengthening critical partnerships, and develop and nurture successful relationships as an effective ambassador for the Conservancy, and the Chesapeake’s national parks and trails.

    Candidates should have a high degree of integrity, honesty, and loyalty with a solid track record of programmatic and supervisory skills and experience. Essential functions will include, but are not limited to:

    Leadership for the development and implementation of conservation, interpretation, and recreation focused programs across the Chesapeake region, working with partners including the National Park Service.
    Ongoing collaboration and partnership building with other Chesapeake conservation stakeholders, including state and federal agencies; non-governmental and historic preservation organizations; and recreational user groups.
    Champion for innovative approaches to programmatic work within a non-traditional park framework, over a large geography in multiple states.
    Financial and administrative management of project budgets, cooperative agreements, contracts, and work plans.
    Content and budget development for grants, helping to identify funding resources to support park-based programming.
    Collaboration with communications staff to ensure program work is effectively marketed through online, social, print, and other media as defined.
    Supervision and leadership of program team, including work plan development, mentoring, performance evaluation, training, and motivation.
    Analytical, strategic, and systematic thinking, to set priorities and anticipate outcomes through executable solutions to complex problems.
    Working as a member of a team of professionals dedicated to the conservation and protection of the Chesapeake Bay’s great rivers and special places.

    Social Marketing to Reduce Sanitary Sewer Overflows

    Sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) contribute pathogens, nutrients and other contaminants to surface waters across the state. According to the MD Dept. of Environment, between 2005-2015, more than 9,000 SSOs discharged approximately 900 million gallons of raw untreated sewage into MD streams. Of these, 40% were reported to be caused by blockages of grease, rags and other inappropriate material placed into the sanitary sewer system, resulting in nearly 16 million gallons of untreated sewage discharges.

    With funding from the Chesapeake Bay Trust, Ridge to Reefs & Lori A. Lilly Environmental Solutions worked with Water Words That Work, the City of Baltimore and Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake to develop a social marketing campaign to encourage proper disposal of household grease and baby wipes in order to reduce this preventable pollution problem. Over the course of multiple years, we developed and implemented our campaign, a pledge drive conducted at churches and food pantries in the City of Baltimore. In the inaugural year of the campaign, 729 people pledged to properly dispose of grease and wipes. Results from our formative research and pre- and post surveys indicate that grease disposal is a relatively easy behavior to change while wipes disposal will be more challenging.

    As urban forest managers seek new ways to engage the public, many municipalities, non-profit groups, and tree advocates turn to citizen science and open data to connect with stakeholders and constituents. These projects can generate public interest, but there are concerns about the need for data coordination, quality control, open access, and long-term funding and resource commitment. The goal is to create a project where time spent on training and oversight yields great benefits in public awareness and support, as well as quality data that will drive good management and policy decisions. In this webinar, Lara Roman will present findings from a study of volunteer data quality in urban tree inventories and implications for the use of citizen science for various urban forest data collection needs. Deborah Boyer will share lessons learned from citizen science and open data projects across the United States and discuss various technical approaches. Together, these presentations will help you determine whether citizen science and open data projects are right for your program.
