    Nature Center Facility Leader I- Robinson Nature Center

    Howard County Recreation and Parks operates the Robinson Nature Center.  This position performs intermediate level recreation services work ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the Center. This position provides support to the Facility Leader II and to full-time staff of the Center.  This position will work closely with the Program Manager for assistance with program marketing including Facebook posts, flyers, posters, and other duties as assigned.  This position will assist in providing customer service and support for center operations. Center hours are Wednesday-Sunday; weekend and occasional evening work is required. This positions is 37.5 hr/week, year-round and non-benefited.

    DUTIES:

    Assist with ActiveNet membership, entering seasonal programs and program registration
    Performs opening and closing duties as assigned
    Greet all visitors, directs guests around the Center based on their interests or purpose for visiting
    Daily monitoring of Center voicemail and directing messages to appropriate party
    Makes phone calls as directed contacting participants with cancellations, program updates and maintains program wait lists. Performs refunds when necessary.
    Set up and take down of equipment for non-package rentals
    Create and maintain permits for Naturalist Birthday Party rentals
    Answers a multi-line phone and directs calls to the appropriate coordinator
    Use multi-channel scanning County radio
    Provides marketing and program promotion to walk in customers. Create small flyers with event information and keep whiteboards up to date.
    Keep outside and inside kiosks and classrooms stocked with appropriate literature
    Performs data processing including program attendance, rental attendance and special event attendance
    Assists with gift shop sales, product placement, ordering and inventory
    Assists with Touch Tank maintenance and Touch Tank public hours when needed
    Maintains community calendars with RNC programs
    Maintain cleanliness of Discovery Room, Legacy Room and front Lobby
    Communicates clearly and courteously with the public and coworkers including issues that could affect public safety
    Work closely with the Naturalist, Program Manager and Volunteer Coordinator to conduct efficient registration and program/special event check ins
    Work closely with the Program Manager for assistance with program marketing including Facebook posts, flyers, posters and other duties as assigned
    Performs other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth operations of the center
    File permits and other paperwork
    Assists with completing center forms
    Monitors center patrons and enforces center rules
    Wear Recreation and Parks shirt and nametag
    Be trained in the use of the AED, CPR and First Aid

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Must have basic knowledge of nature center operations
    • Possess good communication skills
    • Be flexible, reliable, responsible and enjoy working with the general public
    • Must be able to lift 40 pounds
    • Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED equivalency

    RATE OF PAY: Contingent – Paraprofessional – $11.00-13.00 / hour
    Salary commensurate with experience

    Robinson Nature Center Contingent Facility Maintenance Worker

    Assists with the maintenance and day-to-day operations of the Robinson Nature Center (RNC). This position performs maintenance of buildings, grounds and equipment. Performs and supervises custodial services provided at the nature center. Inspects the site to ensure that facilities, grounds, and equipment are in good order and in proper condition and that safety standards are maintained. Assists with the set up and take down for programs, classes & events, including some janitorial duties. Develops and oversees the completion of work projects and other duties as assigned. This position is non-benefited, year-round, 38 hours a week Wednesday-Sunday.

    DUTIES: Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

    General building and grounds maintenance associated with operating a nature center.
    Sets up and take down tables/chairs and various other items required for meetings, trainings, special events etc.
    Performs various minor building maintenance activities such as fixing /adjusting doors, hinges, changing light bulbs, etc.
    Performs various janitorial duties not covered in the janitorial contract to include the operation of buffers, carpet cleaners, safe use of various chemical cleaning agents, trash removal, etc.
    Constructs the physical components of interpretive display media as required.
    Performs and/or oversees various landscape maintenance activities such as mowing, weeding, edging, mulching, pruning, raking, planting, fertilizing, etc.
    Determines and applies appropriate pesticides for vegetation control.
    Maintains fountains/water features.
    Constructs and installs nest boxes.
    During inclement weather, keeps entry ways and walkways clear of snow and ice to maintain public safety.
    Provides a security presence and works on special projects involving building maintenance.
    Other duties may be assigned

    SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS: Read and follow written instructions. Be able to work independently. Operate a motor vehicle safely, capable of using a two-way radio, phone and pager. Be able to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions. Must have knowledge and experience in park, landscape and building maintenance. Must be able to communicate effectively, work unsupervised and make safe and responsible decisions. Operate a variety of hand and power tools and equipment. Be trained in the use of the AED, CPR and First Aid. Must have flexible schedule and possess a Maryland class “C” drivers license with certified driving record. Background checks required.

    EXPERIENCE: Preferred: Related experience and/or past positions with park maintenance or construction.

    EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED, Maryland Class C Driver’s License

    RATE OF PAY: Contingent – Service/Maintenance Advanced Skills Responsibilities $14.00/hour
