    Project Learning Tree’s Carbon and Climate Workshop

    The Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) is offering Project Learning Tree’s Carbon and Climate E-Unit on December 12th from 4:30-7:30 PM at The Ward Museum of Waterfowl Art.

    The Carbon and Climate E-Unit provides activities and resources to help educators and their students explore some of the complex issues involved in Earth’s changing climate. Each part of the unit contains:
    · detailed step-by-step lesson plans
    · downloadable student pages to guide learning
    · a range of assessment tools, including pre and post assessments and evaluation rubrics
    · easy-to-understand teacher background information
    · comprehensive, interactive connections to academic standards
    · suggestions for fiction and non-fiction books to enhance the activities
    · links to websites, videos, and other supplementary resources
    During the workshop, staff will model activities while also offering connections to local bay issues.

    MAEOE Workshop in Frederick, MD

    Thinking about becoming a Green School? Interested in learning about PLT’s Carbon and Climate e-unit? The Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) is holding a workshop at Bar-T Mountainside in Frederick, Maryland on November 8th, space is limited.

    During the morning, educators will learn about the MAEOE MD Green School program and will take home tips and tricks for a successful application. After lunch, instructors will model lessons from Project Learning Tree’s E-Unit, Carbon and Climate. The e-unit is aligned with NGSS standards and is organized around the 5E Instructional Model, which fosters science learning through a planned sequence of instruction. The e-unit is geared towards 6-8 grade standards, however, the e-units include resources for customizing the lessons for younger (fifth grade) or older (high school) students. Educators will take home the online materials, plus local connections to the bay region.

    MD Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education Fall PD Opportunites

    The Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) is offering professional development workshops throughout the fall. Please note these sessions count towards the MAEOE MD Green School Application Objective 1.2, 10% of School Staff have Environmental Education Professional Development.

    PLT’s Carbon and Climate with MAEOE MD Green School Introduction
    This day long course will give educators the information and  resources necessary to communicate carbon and climate issues through hands-on and engaging activities that help teach students how – not what – to think about the environment and their place within it. They also make teaching and learning fun. The unit is aligned with NGSS standards. During the morning, educators will learn about the MD Green School program and the necessary steps schools should take to be successful. In the afternoon, educators will participate in lessons from the Project Learning Tree Carbon and Climate e-unit which is designed for students in grades 6-8.

    Dates: This course runs from 9 AM to 4 PM and is offered multiple times at a variety of locations:
    September 29th: Clearwater Nature Center, Clinton, MD
    November 8th: Bar-T at Mountainside, Frederick, MD
    November 18th: Nanjemoy Creek Environmental Education Center, Nanjemoy, MD
    December 12th: Ward Museum, Salisbury, MD

    Cost: Member—$35, Non-Member—$45

    Using School as a Laboratory: Student Investigation of Air Quality 
    Join Lorna Rosenberg, Green and Healthy Schools Coordinator, Region 3 EPA LEED Green Associate and Rebecca Davis, Education Program Manager, Clean Air Partners, for an in-depth look at air quality. The goal of this course is to give educators the resources, knowledge, and experience necessary to guide their students to complete indoor and outdoor air quality conservation practices around their school environment. This workshop has an online learning introduction component. Substitute teacher stipends available, limit quantity. Please email Christina Gladmon at greenschools@maeoe.org.

Important scientific research from across the Bay’s watershed on the human impact of the bay is present for educators to incorporate into their lessons! Join us on Friday to learn more about NOAA’s E-Learning Platform and on Saturday for Chesapeake Bay Science Sessions! 
    Join us at the Conference Opening! The MAEOE Board of Trustees and HHMI BioInteractive welcome you to Ocean City with food, a free drink and cash bar on Friday evening prior to Keynote Speaker, Dr. Mamie Parker. 
    Finished your weekend off with one of our naturalist field experience: Expand your personal knowledge of fish, birds and the forest! Check out the variety of field experiences we have to offer this year, like the Ward Museum Waterfowl Art and Decoy carving demo!

    If you are planning on applying for the 2015-2016, you must complete the intent to apply. The intent to apply form and fee are due by December 18th.     Maryland Green Schools Training

    Interested in learning about Sustainable Schools in Maryland? Are you applying to be a MD Green School? Interested in strengthening environmental education in your local community?  The Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) is hosting their FREE Fall Green Leader/Green School Training.

    What:  This workshop will review the Maryland Green Schools 2015-2016 Application and the connection with Environmental Literacy.  This is a workshop for those who are interested in becoming a Green Leader or getting a detailed understanding of the Green School Application.  Snacks and beverages will be provided.

    In February 2016, The Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) will bring educators, resource personnel, scientists and researchers together to share experiences and ideas. Be a part of the Annual Conference! Do you have great ideas, lesson plans or favorite activities that you want to share? Are you an expert on cutting edge Environmental Education topics? Consider presenting at the 2016 MAEOE Conference, February 4-7, 2016 at the Princess Royale in Ocean City, Maryland.

    Maryland Green Schools Annual Youth Summit!

     

    We are the Next Gen: Connecting Science to the Environment

    May 29, 2015

    9:00am to 2:00pm

    Sandy Point State Park, Annapolis, MD

    Join 3000 students and teachers from around Maryland.  The annual Youth Summit is held at Sandy Point State Park, along the shores of the majestic Chesapeake Bay. This event is for all Maryland Schools. Teachers and students are invited to discover programs and resources for their schools, through hands-on learning with local environmental education providers. It is a day of celebration for new and recertifying Green Schools and Green Centers.  Whether or not you are receiving an award, attendees participate in award ceremonies, youth leadership activities, and the environmental literacy fair.

    MAEOE is still looking for exhibitors!!! If you are from a regional non-profit or business, consider doing hands on activities with students.  This opportunity allows exhibitors to speak with teachers and parents about their products as well as network with other environmental providers.

    Fee: Free for volunteers and exhibitors. $2 per student, chaperone and teacher (the fee is to defer the costs of the event).  Contact greenschools@maeoe.org if you are interested in bringing more than 100 people.  We are limited to 3000 people total and want to allow as many schools to attend as possible.

    Call for a Student Keynote

    Do you know a student interested in presenting his or her Green School Projects?

    Are you a student who did a great Sustainable Practice at your Maryland Green School?

    Consider applying to present the Keynote at the Maryland Green Schools Youth Summit!

     

    What: MAEOE is looking for a Student Keynote at the MAEOE Maryland Green Schools Youth Summit.  Student(s) will present about one or several Green School Projects that they have done this year.Where:  Sandy Point State Park, Annapolis, MD

    When: May 29th, 2015.  Keynote address will be during the ceremony at 11:15am- 11:45am and will be 7 minutes in length.

    This year at the 2015 MAEOE Youth Summit we are focusing on the difference that students can make and how they can inspire one another. We are looking to highlight two student projects in this year’s keynote speech. All students in a preK-12 Maryland Green School, or in a school applying in 2014-2015, are eligible to present.Presentations can describe projects that cover Water or Energy Conservation, Community Outreach, Stewardship, and more. Presentations should be dynamic, creative and fun for an audience of mostly students grades preK-12.Submissions are due by April 15 at 5:00pm. Find out more here
