    Community Engagement Coordinator

    The Anacostia Watershed Society (AWS) seeks an energetic and enthusiastic Community Engagement Coordinator to support its outreach and environmental stewardship programs. This entry-level position will oversee key aspects of AWS’ annual Earth Day River Clean-up event, prepare for and lead various restoration and recreation events with diverse audiences, and represent AWS at outreach events and activities. The Community Engagement Coordinator works directly with the Manager of Community-Based Restoration and other staff to identify new and diverse communities in the Anacostia watershed and develop meaningful ways to engage members of those communities.

    Program Specialist – Green Infrastructure

    Anacostia Watershed Society is currently seeking a Program Specialist – Green Infrastructure that will work out of our office in Bladensburg, MD. This person will be expected to develop and implement green infrastructure strategies to restore the Anacostia River and engage communities in the watershed.

    General requirements: 4-6 years of experience working as a conservation/environmental program manager. Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Landscape Architecture or related field. Experience with AutoCAD. Knowledge of and work experience in planning, permitting, and implementing green infrastructure projects.

    Water Resources Intern (Paid)

    The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments is looking to fill the position of Water Resources Intern. The intern will be working closely with COG project managers to perform trash and litter surveys along with various other duties within the COG’s environmental programs related to the Anacostia Watershed Program. Applicants should be dependable, hardworking in both field and office environments; highly organized, independent and self-motivated individual with strong research and writing skills.


    Performing the Anacostia stream trash survey protocols; both land-based and in-stream trash surveys;
    Performing stream trash and litter cleanups to collect trash data;
    Assisting in regular maintenance of a small trash trap for data collection purposes;
    Working with program managers to assist development of an “Adopt a Stream” program;
    Maintaining water quality and water security project monitoring equipment;
    Take notes at meetings and assist with written summaries of meetings;
    Performing streambank erosion rate surveys;
    Performing baseflow stream flow measurements using a flow meter;
    Performing instantaneous water quality measurements using a variety of electronic meters; and
    Performing (with Project Managers assistance) baseflow and stormflow water quality grab sampling;
    Performing reforestation site evaluation, planting and site maintenance;
    Performing data entry into spreadsheets and databases; and
    Performing limited Anacostia restoration-related GIS tasks (i.e., new feature dataset creation, digitizing drainage boundaries, updating geodatabases and associated metadata)

    Tree Planting Event

    Come reforest the banks of the Northeast Branch of the Anacostia River and help fight climate change! We will be planting approximately 150 native trees and shrubs. No experience neessary.

    Location: Riverdale Community Park is along the Northeast Branch in Prince George’s County. Traveling north on Kenilworth Avenue, take a left onto Riverdale Road. The planting site is located east of Riverdale Elementary School, with access from the NE Branch Trail.  Parking is available in the school parking lot.
