    Spring Break Science Art Studio at Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary

    Field sketching, macrophotography by phone, and solar printing are just some of the techniques children will learn during our Spring Break Science Art Studio. Hosted by local artists and inspired by the natural sanctuary surroundings, children learn about the different ways art can be used to express science and get to work creating! The fee covers all art supplies including a sketchbook and mini macrophotography lens for cell phones kit that children will keep. The day will culminate with a mini exhibition for family and friends of the children’s favorite creations. Everyone will have an opportunity to put their work on exhibit in the sanctuary visitor center for the month following the series. Ages: 10 -13 (Grades 5 – 8). Fee: $40

    Spring Break Youth Programs at Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary

    Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary’s Spring Break programs are designed to engage youth in the natural world through exploration and creative expression. Spring Break in the Park takes children on a full day, outdoor adventure to get hands-on in the forests and wetlands of Jug Bay. Our Science Art Studio will introduce children to a variety of artistic skills from science illustration to wood-burning and includes a mini art gallery and reception for parents and guardians at the end of the day.

    Three Weeks Left to Apply: Jug Bay Undergraduate/Graduate Summer Research Internship

    Applications for Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary Undergraduate/Graduate Summer Research Internship Program are due Monday, February 27, 2017. This compensated internship is open to qualified undergraduate and graduate students who will conduct a summer research project within Sanctuary grounds under the mentorship of a staff member or an associated researcher.

    Research themes include:

    Monitoring Jug Bay Small Mammal Population
    Sediment Retention by Hydrilla, a Common Submerged Aquatic Plant Found in the Patuxent River
    Studying the Faunal Assemblage of a Native American Midden
    Patuxent River Coastline and Wetland Community Historical Changes

    Registration & Proposal Submission Open: 2016 Patuxent River Conference

    On Thursday, June 23, the 2016 Patuxent River Conference will be held at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Edgewater, MD.

    The theme of this years’ conference is, “Exploring Environmental Education & Science Communication Along the Patuxent River” and brings together those who are using the power of science to learn and tell the story of the River with local educators who are dedicated to sharing the story with the public and students, the future stewards of the River.
    Registration is open and presenter proposals are currently accepted until May 1, 2016. There are several inspiring themes of the conference that overlap with current science, successful formal and informal education case studies, and meaningful translation of science findings to the public through creative communication & artistic interpretation.
