CBFS is very excited to host our first ever Bioblitz on September 20, 2025! This day program will provide the opportunity for you to learn more about the importance of biodiversity, how to identify and distinguish species, and the chance to apply this knowledge to our local coastal ecosystems in a friendly competition!

A Bioblitz is a rapid biodiversity study within a designated area; essentially, you identify as many species in an area before time runs out! For the purpose of this project, we will focus on three unique habitats on the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (Assateague Island). To record our observations, we will be utilizing an online application called iNaturalist; ‘iNat’ is a platform where people upload their observations and people can collaborate to identify what species was observed. Many scientists use the data collected on iNat for their research and studies, so it is an incredible opportunity to contribute to community science!

We are very excited to offer this program free of charge to the public! All we ask is that you provide your own packed lunch for the program and transportation to and from the Chincoteague Bay Field Station. We will meet at CBFS at 8:30 AM on September 20 and begin the day with a brief lesson on biodiversity, iNat, and species identification. We will then transport participants to the Refuge, index our three habitats, eat lunch, and transport all participants back to CBFS by 3:30 PM.
