Misinformation now spreads like wildfire. From misleading headlines to non-expert influencers and cherry-picking of data, it can be like the wild, wild West out there. Marine scientist Ellen Prager and meteorologist Dave Jones recently released a book that combats misinformation, provides accurate science and is laced with humor and engaging storytelling. In this webinar, they’ll answer some of the most frequently asked and wackiest questions they and colleagues get about the ocean, atmosphere, marine life, weather and climate change, and include a scatter of cartoon-like illustrations. Ellen and Dave will also talk about misinformation in general, share some of their favorite questions and answers in their book (fun included), and discuss the need for broader public and community engagement.
This event is part of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC)’s free evening science talks, and it will be recorded! Closed captions will be available during the live stream and on the recording. By signing up on Zoom, you’ll be able to watch live and receive a link to the recording a few days after the live stream. SERC seeks to showcase a wide variety of topics and perspectives for its evening science talks. Views expressed during these talks belong to the individual speakers and not the Smithsonian.
