Anacostia Riverkeeper (ARK) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the Anacostia River through advocacy, enforcement, science, and community engagement to ensure a swimmable, fishable river for all.

The Engagement & Education Coordinator is an energetic, creative, and organized communicator who enjoys connecting people to the Anacostia River through compelling digital storytelling and hands-on education. This role leads ARK’s digital communications and storytelling efforts, creating engaging content across social media, the website, and other multimedia platforms, while also coordinating environmental education programs and workshops for youth and adults. The ideal candidate is a strong storyteller and communicator who can translate the importance of the Anacostia River into content that inspires people to care, learn, and get involved, while also feeling comfortable developing educational materials, facilitating workshops, and working with students, educators, and community partners.

Note: This is a 40-hour/week salaried position that typically runs Tuesday-Saturday and includes regular evening and weekend commitments.

Duties are as follows:

Digital Communications & Storytelling – This role leads Anacostia Riverkeeper’s social media presence by developing engaging content that educates and inspires the public to connect with the Anacostia River. Responsibilities include managing the organization’s social media platforms and website, creating regular posts, short-form videos, blogs, photography, and other multimedia content, highlighting volunteer opportunities and educational programs, and sharing stories that showcase the river, its wildlife, and the communities working to restore it. 

Education & Community Workshops – This role develops and delivers educational workshops and public learning opportunities that connect community members to the river and its restoration. Responsibilities include coordinating workshop logistics, developing educational materials, facilitating events, and evaluating programming to continually improve community engagement.

Youth Environmental Education – This role implements Anacostia Riverkeeper’s Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE) programming, along with other school and out-of-school student partnerships. This includes working with schools, teachers, and community partners to provide engaging watershed education for K-12 students. Responsibilities include classroom lessons and outdoor field experiences, developing educational activities, and helping students build meaningful connections to the Anacostia River.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience creating engaging social media content, including strong writing, photography, video, and/or multimedia storytelling skills
  • Experience managing social media platforms and developing content that informs, educates, and engages a public audience
  • Experience with website content management systems and/or other digital communications tools
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex environmental or scientific topics into clear, accessible, and engaging content
  • Experience developing, coordinating, or facilitating educational programs, workshops, community events, or other public-facing programming
  • Strong interpersonal and facilitation skills, with the ability to create welcoming and inclusive learning and community engagement experiences
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities independently, meet deadlines, and stay organized in a fast-paced nonprofit environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace and comfort learning and using new digital tools and platforms
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends for events and programs

Preferred:

  • Experience developing and implementing a social media or digital communications strategy
  • Experience with short-form video production and editing, photography, graphic design, or other visual storytelling
  • Experience managing an organization’s social media presence and/or digital editorial calendar
  • Experience developing and delivering Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE) programming or familiarity with MWEE principles
  • Experience working with schools, teachers, youth-serving organizations, or community-based organizations
  • Spanish language proficiency

Compensation

  • Salary of $50-60,000 a year, commensurate with experience
  • Health Plan, Retirement Contributions, & Liberal Time off
