Anacostia Riverkeeper is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the Anacostia River through advocacy, enforcement, science, and community engagement to ensure a swimmable, fishable river for all.

 

The Restoration & Stewardship Projects Manager leads Anacostia Riverkeeper’s on-the-ground restoration initiatives by coordinating green infrastructure projects, community stewardship efforts, trash reduction programs, and habitat improvement activities that create healthier waterways and more resilient communities. The ideal candidate is an experienced project manager who enjoys both working outdoors and building collaborative partnerships. This role balances field work and project management while helping establish restoration as a core organizational program alongside advocacy, science, and education.

 

Duties are as follows:

Green Infrastructure & Restoration Project Management – This role leads the planning, implementation, and long-term stewardship of Anacostia Riverkeeper’s green infrastructure and restoration projects throughout the watershed. Responsibilities include identifying project opportunities, coordinating project design and installation, overseeing maintenance of rain gardens, bioswales, native plantings, and other best management practices (BMPs), managing invasive species, conducting routine site inspections, and evaluating project performance to ensure long-term environmental benefits.

Trash Reduction & Community Stewardship – This role manages Anacostia Riverkeeper’s field-based trash reduction initiatives, including trash trap maintenance, community cleanups, litter interception projects, and other stewardship activities. Responsibilities include coordinating field logistics, maintaining equipment and supplies, supervising field operations, supporting volunteer stewardship activities, and collaborating with the Science & Data Program Manager to ensure restoration and trash reduction efforts complement the organization’s monitoring and advocacy priorities.

Partnership Development & Program Growth – This role builds and maintains relationships with government agencies, funding partners, landowners, contractors, consultants, and community organizations to advance restoration initiatives throughout the watershed. Responsibilities include identifying new project opportunities, supporting grant development and implementation, coordinating project partners and contractors, assisting with permitting and procurement, representing Anacostia Riverkeeper in collaborative restoration efforts, and helping expand restoration as a core organizational program.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, ecology, natural resources, landscape architecture, environmental engineering, forestry, horticulture, or a related field
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience managing restoration, conservation, green infrastructure, or environmental stewardship projects
  • Knowledge of green stormwater infrastructure, native plant communities, invasive species management, and urban watershed restoration
  • Experience supervising volunteers, contractors, interns, or field crews
  • Strong organizational, project management, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Ability to lift approximately 50 pounds and perform field work in varying weather conditions
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Valid driver’s license & access to a reliable vehicle
  • Living within the immediate DMV region for quick response time to emergency situations (within the Anacostia Watershed preferred)  

 

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with Chesapeake Bay restoration practices and watershed management
  • Experience managing environmental grants and contractor procurement
  • Experience using GIS, GPS, or environmental field mapping tools
  • Experience operating boats or working in aquatic environments
  • Spanish language proficiency
