The Education Center of the Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park educates youth and adults about maritime heritage and the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay. The AMM seeks contractual Lead Educators for its summer camp programming. The Summer Camp Lead Educator position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about leading youth, possess a love for the outdoors, and have prior summer camp experience.

Educators will be called upon to run 4-5 weeks of summer camp and act as the lead camp instructor for a group of 16 campers each week. AMM summer camp runs from July 8th– August 23rd, and Lead Educators will be expected to work from 8:30am to 3:30pm each weekday. Compensation for this position is $550 per week.

Educator Responsibilities:

  • Create comprehensive lesson plans for week-long summer camp sessions
  • Lead a group of 16 campers (K-9th grade) through daily activities including crafts, outdoor exploration, games, kayaking, etc.
  • Manage all aspects of AMM’s day camps including child supervision, daily set up and clean up, and program material management
  • Ensure the site is kept clean, organized, and free of litter
  • Communicate with Camp Director regarding concerns, challenges, and camper experiences
  • Communicate with and manage co-counselors and volunteers
  • Maintain accurate program records including health logs and daily attendance
  • Ensure child safety, manage behavior, and act as a role model and mentor
  • Learn, understand, and implement camp emergency policies

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Environmental Sciences, Education, or related field preferred
  • Demonstrated experience working with children
  • Prior lesson planning experience
  • Strong organizational, group, and time management skills
  • Flexibility and the ability to problem solve
  • High energy and enthusiasm
  • Willingness to work outside in all weather conditions
  • Ability to lift at least 25 pounds
  • CPR/First Aid Certification or willingness to obtain
  • Must obtain a background check
  • US Sailing – Small Boat Level 1 or ACA – Level 3 River Canoeing or Kayaking instructor certification preferred
