POSITION: Bilingual (Spanish) Interpretive Outreach Assistant

STARTING SALARY: $15 per hour

Background:

The Chesapeake Conservancy in partnership with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and National Park Service Chesapeake Bay Office, is hiring 4 Bilingual (Spanish) Interpretive Outreach Assistants to conduct visitor use studies and develop inclusive programming at Maryland State Parks. Bilingual Interpretive Outreach Assistants will lead programs, connect with visitors, and inspire stewardship of the Chesapeake Bay.

These positions will begin virtually and may require travel throughout the state of Maryland.

General Responsibilities:

Successful candidates must be able to communicate (oral and written) in English and Spanish, work independently in the field, and perform various interpretive, educational and administrative duties, including:

  • Build relationships and meaningfully engage Spanish-speaking communities;
  • Collaborate with park staff to translate and develop programs;
  • Create virtual content and programs for both Chesapeake Conservancy and the National Park Service Chesapeake Bay;
  • Translate traditionally in-person programs to a virtual setting;
  • Develop program advertisements and assist with public relations;   
  • Cultivate a positive, fun, and safe virtual environment for audiences from all ages and backgrounds;
  • Engage the Spanish-speaking community in hands-on activities, stories and other creative pathways that spark a personal connection to the Chesapeake Bay;
  • Conduct Visitor Use Studies of Parks, develop and disseminate surveys to park visitors (virtually);
  • Track audience engagements with virtual projects and programs, and gauge the success of these materials;
  • Assist with the development of nature centers and exhibits;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Shifts may be as long as 12 hours per day. Minimum of 30 hours per week, not to exceed 40 hours per week.

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Possession of a high school diploma or high school equivalence certificate.

Experience: Hold solid communication skills in both English and Spanish; possess an interest of natural and cultural history; have experience working with the public; ability to follow oral and written instructions; and ability to work in a team setting.

  • Maintain a neat and clean appearance.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Ability to travel across the state of Maryland as needed (must have or be willing to obtain a driver’s license)
  • Demonstrate oral and written proficiency in Spanish

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with engaging diverse communities
  • Experience in social science / survey research
  • Solid interpretation and educational skills.
  • Fluency in a language, in addition to English.

  • Ability to transport themselves to trainings, events, and other activities when necessary.
