Excited to Apply? The Montgomery County Department of Parks, Enterprise Division, seeks a Recreation/Enterprise Facility Manager I that will manage the Cabin John lce Rink: Skating Pro Shop . The position will be responsible for staff training and supervision; facility and equipment maintenance; creating, implementing, and providing oversight for daily operations and special events; purchasing and inventory control; administration; cash accounting; budget preparation and oversight; marketing and customer service.

The Cabin John Ice Rink, located in Rockville, MD is a year-round indoor skating facility which offers a wide range of ice skating and ice hockey classes and camps for all ages and skill levels, as well as special events and skating exhibitions throughout the year. Public skating sessions and specialty skating sessions are offered throughout the week. The Pro shop offers a full line of products for figure skaters and hockey players along with offering a number of skate services, including sharpening, blade mounting, heat molding, stretching, and more.

The Cabin John Miniature Train is a replica of the 1863 C.P. Huntington, a 4-2-4T steam locomotive purchased by the Southern Pacific Railroad and named in honor of Collis P. Huntington, President of the Southern Pacific Company. The train’s five passenger cars carry 70 visitors on a scenic two-mile ride through the Cabin John Regional Park (about a 15-minute ride). There is a party room onsite, which is rented by patrons and is available year-round. The train operates seasonally from April – October and currently hosts two special events in the Spring and Fall.

Weekends and evenings are required.

This position requires regular exercise of independent judgment and performance of duties within policy guidelines. Also required is the development of successful business strategies and methodologies to achieve optimum facility operations.

Examples of Important Duties

Manager Pro Shop

  • Manages the overall day to day operations of the Cabin John Ice Rink Skating Pro Shop
  • Supervises staff. Recruits, hires, trains, schedules, and evaluates seasonal staff to assist with operations. Ensure all staff receive various trainings (CPR/First Aid, Customer Service; ActiveMONTGOMERY, etc.). Conducts performance appraisals
  • Trains staff to assist customers to purchase equipment such as skating boots, blades, and protective gear.
  • Selects and orders merchandise and supplies.
  • Controls inventory and ensure accuracy of sales and inventory records.
  • Manages customer service activities of the facility. Sets a positive example for employees ensuring customers are treated in a prompt, professional, respectful manner.

Manager Miniature Train

  • Manages the overall day to day operations of the Cabin John Train
  • Develops and implement long term goals and operations procedures (e.g., hours, rules, safety, etc.)
  • Supervises staff. Recruits, hires, trains, schedules, and evaluates seasonal staff to assist with operations. Ensure all staff receive various trainings (CPR/First Aid, Defensive Driving; Customer Service; ActiveMONTGOMERV, etc.). Conducts performance appraisals
  • Coordinates schedules for facility rentals/parties ensuring conflict free operations and customer satisfaction
  • Manages customer service activities of the facility. Sets a positive example for employees ensuring customers are treated in a prompt, professional, respectful manner.
  • Coordinates maintenance and repairs of equipment and the facility
  • Works on project planning and facility improvements
  • Coordinates annual safety Inspections to ensure the Miniature Train is in compliance with Maryland Amusement Ride Regulations (DLLR)
  • Organize and direct “Eye Spy” Spring and Fall Special Events

Budget and Administration

  • Prepares budget formulation regarding projected revenues and expenditures. Responsible for regularly monitoring revenues and expenditures within approved budget and reporting them to Management.
  • Prepares financial reports and recommendation of fees
  • Performs a variety of administrative tasks such as: cash reports (collects and deposits revenues); record facility inventory (tools, office supplies, resale, etc.); approving staff timecards and staff schedules
  • Assists with marketing the facilities. Works with marketing staff to promote facilities through various media outlets including social media (Facebook, websites); assist with preparation of marketing items such as brochures, flyers, sales and special event materials

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or four years’ experience in one of the following fields: parks, recreation, education, business administration, physical education, communication, leisure services, or in area of required specialty; and
  • Two years of responsible professional experience working in a facility related to parks, recreation, education, business administration, health education, physical education, communication, leisure services, or area of required specialty; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A valid driver’s license or ability to acquire one; and
  • A valid operating license (e.g., county pool operator’s, childcare license) as appropriate.

Working Conditions:

Extended hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays will be required, facilities are open 7 days a week. Hours may vary depending on event schedules.
