Job Description

The Coastal Resource Scientist – Monitoring Coordinator will be primarily responsible for coordinating surveys to monitor the status and health of restored oyster reefs, assess and identify areas suitable for oyster restoration, manage and analyze ecological data, and participate in research to identify and develop additional tools for assessing coastal restoration success. Extensive experience and confidence in leading and coordinating field-based research is required. We are seeking a candidate with excellent quantitative skills, a foundational understanding of oyster reef and estuarine ecology, and experience managing and analyzing ecological datasets.

 

The Coastal Resource Scientist will work closely with ORP’s Coastal Science team and will collaborate with government agencies, other NGO’s, and academics. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, self-directed, and possess the ability to make sound project decisions. The position requires strong communication, leadership, strategic/critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

 

Specific job responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate oyster reef monitoring, including leading survey design, field logistics, managing resources and data
  • Manage and maintain ORP’s monitoring spatial databases
  • Conduct analysis of ecological datasets, including biological, water quality, and other ecological data
  • Write technical reports, contribute to proposals, contracts, and peer-reviewed publications
  • Support ORP’s existing oyster restoration, sustainable fisheries, and oyster aquaculture programs

 

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science, Ecology, Fisheries Science, Biological Oceanography, or related discipline
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Extensive experience coordinating and leading field-based sampling
  • Comfortable operating and working from small boats and larger vessels
  • Intermediate to advanced experience with GIS software (ArcGIS), conventional databases, and geodatabases
  • Coordination of data collection tasks, data management, and quality control and assurance
  • Demonstrated experience and competence with statistical analysis and data synthesis (coding expertise in R, Matlab, etc. is a plus)
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills

 

Position Details and Benefits:

This position is full-time permanent (40 hours) with full benefits including health insurance, 401k, and paid time off. Salary is commensurate with experience. The primary work location is in Annapolis, Maryland. Regular in-state travel to meetings and project locations is required. During the COVID-19 pandemic, work operations are flexible and include a blend of field work, office work, and telework.
