Are you interested in natural history and the behind-the-scenes world of museum collections? Do you have a desire to preserve artifacts, specimens, and data for future generations?

Apply to be the Natural History Society of Maryland’s fall Collections Management Intern! The intern will assist the NHSM Collections Manager with a wide range of collections management tasks, including organizing, tagging, cataloging, and documenting collection specimens and artifacts. Get hands-on experience with historical scientific collections and learn all about data management in our collections system, Arctos.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist with ongoing collections care under the guidance of the Collections Manager.
  • Organize, tag, catalog, handle, and photograph various specimens and artifacts.
  • Create records in the organization’s collection management system (Arctos), ensuring accurate data entry and adherence to provided standards.
  • Ensure proper specimen handling and safety procedures within the collection.
  • Ensure that collection items are stored following best practices.
  • Research as needed, including identifying and contextualizing specimens.

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in an academic program at the undergraduate or graduate level with a focus on museum studies, records management, or the natural sciences.

Preferred Qualities

  • Experience with data entry, ideally in a collections management or archival system.
  • Familiarity with Google Drive Suite programs (Google Sheets, Google Docs, etc.).
  • Ability to read cursive handwriting.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and organized records with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational skills to help maintain order in the collection and storage areas.
  • Strong critical thinking skills to evaluate, process, and contextualize.
  • Excellent communication skills and comfort with collaboration.
  • Enthusiasm for learning more about collections management and contributing to the preservation of natural history with the Natural History Society of Maryland.

  • Period: September 1, 2025 to December 12, 2025

  • Compensation: $1500 stipend
