Old Dominion University (ODU) is recruiting a dynamic and collaborative leader as Executive Director of the Institute for Coastal Adaptation & Resilience (ICAR). The Executive Director will have the opportunity to make a significant global impact by fostering research, leveraging resources, building connections, and leading efforts to turn world-class science into global practice. The Executive Director also will have the opportunity to build on a unique partnership with the City of Norfolk, expanding that to include other localities within the Hampton Roads region.
Reporting to the Vice President of Research, the Executive Director will lead an interdisciplinary team of faculty from across the University, facilitate research and community engagement, and help to envision and develop educational programs to build the workforce of tomorrow. The vital importance of the work of ICAR for the region and the world has already garnered significant private and public support, and there is enthusiasm throughout ODU to consider opportunities to develop and deepen curricula related to resiliency and adaptation and to recruit faculty and attract students who would be drawn to this work.
The Executive Director will also collaborate with other university centers and departments, and will build partnerships with nonprofits, community groups, government agencies, corporations, and peer organizations locally, state-wide, nationally, and internationally.
The position is open to candidates with a variety of leadership experiences, a collaborative approach, entrepreneurial instincts, a commitment to diversity and equity, and excitement about and commitment to the important work of ICAR.
The Executive Director will be a skilled advocate with the ability to work with community members, academics, elected officials, media representatives, and members of the business community. They will have a history of leadership in resiliency projects, familiarity with academic institutions and scholarship, and experience forging stakeholder partnerships. Additionally, the ability to communicate resilience and adaptation research findings and best practices to citizens, decision-makers, and the media is important.
A master’s degree or higher in a related field is required. Candidates with appropriate academic credentials may be considered for a tenured academic appointment. Candidates should also bring evidence of success advancing coastal resiliency in policy and/or practice.
