Since 2009, the Cedar Ridge community—located in Spencerville, Maryland—has farmed a little over
half an acre of chemical-free vegetable and fruit crops. Each year we grow about two tons of fresh
produce, which is given to local groups that serve the hungry and homeless. In addition to providing
food to neighbors in need, the farm is a way for us to take a stand on the issue of hunger. Through the
farm we form alliances with other groups working on this issue. And by sowing and weeding, watering
and harvesting, we demonstrate that hungry and homeless people are incredibly precious to God, and
are worth our time and toil. We also realize, as we serve together, how blessed we are—with food and
health, with land and resources, and with a loving community.
Cedar Ridge is looking to hire a part-time farm assistant to support the work of the farm team. The
qualified candidate will have familiarity with gardening, be hardworking, have good inter-personal
skills, and be willing to follow instructions.
Under the direction of the farm team leader, the farm assistant will:
• Supervise Sunday morning workdays (9-11 a.m.), prioritizing planting, weeding and harvesting
tasks to maximize the use of volunteers.
• Conduct additional planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting as needed between workdays
to ensure the farm remains productive.
• Ensure food is harvested, weighed, logged and stored in an appropriate and timely manner to
facilitate deliveries.
• Keep the farm shed organized and tidy.
• Communicate to volunteers the vision and mission of the farm, the importance of food security
issues in our region, and the need for a healthy diet.
The farm assistant will be hired for approximately 16 hours per week during June to the end of August,
not to exceed 200 hours total. Work hours will be flexible and agreed to in advance with the farm team
leader. Hours will include Sunday mornings.
