Job Description

The City of Fredericksburg is an independent city, and as of 2017 the population is estimated to be 28,360. It is 53 miles south of Washington DC and 58 miles north of Richmond. Located near where the Rappahannock River crosses the Atlantic Seaboard fall line, it was a prominent port in Virginia during the colonial era. There are a tremendous number of historical sites, the city is a hub for tourism and commercial economic activity. Fredericksburg sees itself as a “Proud City with Unlimited Potential”. This position may be housed in the Stafford County VCE office and/or in office space with City of Fredericksburg.

The City of Fredericksburg ANR position will focus on establishing and building a thriving water quality/nutrient management program, for the protection of the shared water resource. This program will complement and support the draft Phase III Watershed Implementation Plan (WIP) submitted with the Commonwealth of VA. Further, that work will assist the city of Fredericksburg to develop plans for properties, serve as a resource for other conservation organizations, and collaborate with partners such as the Friends of the Rappahannock, and Tri-County City Soil and Water Conservation District, University of Mary Washington and others. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to build partnerships and program support to ensure maintaining current and future funding for this initiative. This position is a restricted, grant funded position for the period of January 1, 2019 through October 31, 2021.

Required Qualifications

Agent faculty positions require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) in a relevant discipline from an accredited college or university. A master’s degree and promotion to Extension Agent are required no later than the sixth year of employment. Demonstrated ability to recruit, select, train and manage volunteers; demonstrated ability to lead groups, plan, implement, facilitate, teach, and evaluate educational information programs; knowledge and use of computer technology in educational programming and management and presentation skills; excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with low income, limited resource and minority audiences; ability to work with minimal supervision in an unstructured setting. Extension agents demonstrate flexibility, adaptability; a team-oriented mindset, yet are able to work independently, and a strong desire to help clients succeed.

A master’s degree is preferred.
