Position Description for a Full-Time AmeriCorps Member

with the Salisbury Zoo

2021-2022

 

The Salisbury Zoo is seeking a Full-Time AmeriCorps member.

 

The member will assist in facilitating both on and off-site programs.  Under the guidance of the Education Curator, a large percent of the time served will focus on volunteer coordination, assisting with scheduling of volunteers, and facilitating service learning projects with groups and individuals. Assistance with training and recruitment of long-term volunteers will also be included.  After appropriate training, animal care, handling, and enrichment, will be a portion of the weekly duties.

As a full-time member, the weekly schedule will be somewhat flexible, but the member would need to be available to serve the majority of their hours Sunday through Thursday.  Most hours are during the typical work day, but there may be times when evening hours are a possibility. The member may be asked to be available for special events scheduled after hours or on weekends.  Hours outside of the normal scheduled times will be in exchange for the standard work hours during the week of the event.

 

Requirements for applicants include the following:

  • Have a strong interest in serving the community
  • Be able to relate to diverse populations
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Able to provide copy of either high school diploma, GED, or college transcript
  • Have reliable transportation
  • Be available to attend the tuition-free, AmeriCorps class at Salisbury University bi-weekly during the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Must successfully pass a comprehensive Criminal History Check, which includes FBI fingerprinting
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or lawful permanent resident alien
  • Applicants DO NOT need to be college students, anyone from the community who fits the above requirements may participate.

 

 

Benefits available to the AmeriCorps Member include:

  • Valuable experience
  • A bi-weekly stipend of $629.16
  • An education award of $6,345 for future educational expenses or repayment of student loans – members who are age 55 or older may gift their ed. award to a child or grandchild
  • Federal student loan forbearance while in service, with exemption from paying interest accrued during that time
  • 6 tuition-free credits at Salisbury University for completion of training course
  • Health insurance and child care reimbursement, if eligible
  • Access to AmeriCorps Alumni Network

This position is offered through a partnership with ShoreCorps, the AmeriCorps program at Salisbury University. It is contingent upon federal funding and approval of the AmeriCorps office.
