The Horticulture Educator at Historic London Town and Gardens (Edgewater, MD) spearheads the research, implementation, and evaluation of horticulture, botany, and ecology programs for children, adults, and families.

Responsibilities:

Develop, lead, and evaluate youth, family, and adult programming, including:

  • Research, develop, market, and teach educational programs for school children in keeping with Next Gen Science Standards.

  • Develop, market, and implement garden and STEM programs for non-school audiences including scouts, families, and adults

  • Interface with area schools, non-profits, and government agencies

Additionally, this person will:

  • Lead interactive tours of and programs in our 10 acres of woodland and ornamental gardens

  • Lead interactive school tours of our historic area (including conducting demonstrations of various 18th century skills in various weather conditions while wearing 18th century costume in one original colonial tavern and two reconstructions)

  • Assist in the planning and implementation of interactive materials in the gardens and natural spaces

  • Assist with front desk duties and customer service

  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications & Skills:

  • 3 years of experience working in an informal education setting (including parks, botanic gardens, teaching farms, etc)

  • Proven experience in successful program development

  • College-level education and / or similar-level experience in the fields of horticulture, botany, ecology, agriculture, or related fields

  • Experience working with the public and speaking to visitors of all ages, including school and adult groups

  • Interest in, and ability to learn about, 18th century history & trade skills.

 

Physical & Environmental Requirements:

The candidate must possess the following:

  • Ability to perform various functions such as standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, walking across uneven surfaces, climbing stairs, lifting, seeing in varying light conditions, and participating in some strenuous physical activities

  • Ability to work outside all day in varying weather conditions

  • Ability to come in daily contact with pollen, dust, smoke, perfumes, mold, and other seasonal and environmental allergens

  • Ability to wear historically accurate and complete 18th century clothing for an entire workday, some of which may be uncomfortable to a modern wearer

Duration of Position:

This is a grant-funded position, not to exceed 12 months.

Work Schedule:

The horticulture educator will work 40 hours per week: Wednesday through Sunday, from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm, with occasional evening work.

Director of Public Programs

Compensation:

  • $40,000 annually

  • Retirement plan and Foundation match
