The Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator develops and executes strategic activities and initiatives to build Potomac Riverkeeper Network’s membership, engage members, reach new audiences, expand educational opportunities, and develop partnerships. This position is a full-time, entry level position (one-year contract with possibility of renewal) and will work out of PRKN’s Washington, DC office. Currently, the team works remotely, coming into the office as needed. 

Responsibilities include: 

Public Outreach Planning & Execution 

  • Plan and organize outreach activities, often in partnership with other nonprofits, clubs, groups and businesses. Examples include on-the-water events, volunteer trainings, and presentations to groups 
  • Participate in planning and execution of the annual Riverpalooza and RioPalooza paddling, rafting, fishing, snorkeling and tubing events throughout the watershed
  • Develop and disseminate outreach and educational materials related to PRKN’s Swimmable Potomac Campaign, with a focus on supporting the Potomac Riverkeeper’s work to lift the swim ban and protect public recreation in the DC portion of the Potomac River 
  • Plan and execute events, activities, and presentations to engage members and different audiences about Potomac Riverkeeper and the history and pollution issues of the Potomac River and to encourage the use and enjoyment of the river, with a special focus on Black, Indigenous, and People of Color 
  • Manage and expand PRKN’s volunteer network, including working in conjunction with coordinators of specific programs, such as water quality monitoring and rapid response 

Communications Production 

  • Manage social media and networking strategies and their coordination with PRKN’s website, including outreach events 
  • Working with the Communications consultants, develop E-News, website, social media, and other promotional materials for events and activities 
  • Manage the photography and videotaping of events, outreach activities, and Riverkeeper program activities, including post-event production and editing
  • Maintain video archive. Manage video content on the website. Liaison with other groups as necessary on outside media projects
  • Develop educational and outreach content for the website, newsletters, vertical response, annual report, and other PRKN publications 

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree 
  • Commitment to the mission of Potomac Riverkeeper Network 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks. Desire and ability to work independently in a self-directed, small-office environment 
  • Ability to work well in a team environment 
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills 
  • Knowledge of social networking forums and strategies to promote causes
  • Has a valid driver’s license and access to a car 
  • Some weekend and evening hours 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Fluency in Spanish 
  • Photography and video experience 
  • Volunteer management experience 
  • On water skills 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office. Basic design experience (Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Photoshop and InDesign). Basic website design
