Background

The Town of Oxford is seeking a Research Scientist to help implement a 3-year study on

coastal flooding, erosion, and stormwater issues facing the Town. The planned research and

product development has 5 components: Tidal monitoring and prediction, sediment transport and

wave modelling, stormwater planning, performance and habitat suitability assessment of Nature

Based Infrastructure projects, and social science. The successful candidate will operate as part of

a larger National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) team coordinated through

the NOAA/NCCOS Oxford Laboratory.

Education requirements and abilities: Graduate, or equivalent, full-performance level

knowledge of the theories, principles, and methods of a technical professional field and of a

specialty within that field, and the ability to define problems, perform background research,

develop, and execute a project plan, organize and evaluate results, and prepare reports of

findings.

Qualified candidates should be able to:

• Lead and/or assist in the planning and conduct of scientific surveys and experiments

in field and laboratory settings;

• Demonstrate experience in resiliency, oceanography, or related field through

professional experience, coursework and/or publication;

• Plan and coordinate logistics of field operations;

• Conduct analysis of oceanographic, elevation, and fisheries data;

• Demonstrate experience in communicating scientific results to scientific and lay

audiences;

Highly qualified candidates will have:

• A PhD in oceanography, ecological sciences, natural resources sciences, resiliency, or

closely related field;

• Strong skills with spatial data analysis and demonstrated command of related software

(ArcGIS, R, Sas, Python, etc.)

• Demonstrated proficiency in modeling wave attenuation and sediment transport

(WEMo, SCHISM, etc).• Familiar with different field sampling, processing, and laboratory techniques related to

understanding wave energy, water levels, elevations, and plant cover and density.

• Experience working in the marine/estuarine environment on small vessels;

• Willingness to work in adverse conditions including inclement weather;

• Ability to lift 50 pounds;

• Ability to work well with others in team settings

This position reports to the Town Manager of the Town of Oxford, MD and is positioned in the

Town Office or the NOAA/NCCOS laboratory in Oxford, MD.

Salary Range

The starting salary range for this position is between $65,000-$75,000, depending on

qualifications.

Relocation

There is no relocation assistance offered for this position.
