Elizabeth River Project, one of the oldest environmental nonprofits on the Chesapeake Bay, is looking for a candidate to fill our part-time, seasonal opening working in our River Star Homes program. In this free program, citizens commit to 7 behavior changes for a cleaner Elizabeth River. The position will run from early fall to around the start of the new year. This position will work with property owners in the Elizabeth River watershed to implement river-friendly practices, including living shorelines, oyster reefs, rain gardens, and more.

The River Star Homes Seasonal Assistant will work directly with the Landscape Designer and Environmental Field Foreman within our River Star Homes Program. This position will assist with implementation of on-the ground improvements to help homeowners reduce their environmental impact on the Elizabeth River; work with other Elizabeth River Project team members to install sand and wetland grasses to create living shorelines, build oyster reefs, install rain barrels and construct rain gardens; maintain a safe work environment for all staff and volunteers; educate the public and recruit for River Star Homes at outreach events throughout the area; and complete additional cross-training as time allows with restoration planning, shoreline permitting, educational events, and more.

Qualifications and experience of the desired candidate include strong customer service skills, ability to be prompt and professional at all times, ability to perform tasks in accordance with safety standards and rules, strong interdisciplinary and teamwork skills, basic landscaping abilities (shoveling, wheelbarrowing, raking, etc.); an interest in environmental stewardship and sustainable landscaping practices. This job requires the candidate to be comfortable working in and around water, and capable of completing tasks involving manual labor (lifting and carrying objects up to 35 pounds) and strenuous fieldwork within safe working conditions. The candidate should have skills in Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

This part-time, seasonal position pays $14.00 / hour, at 20-28 hours/week.
