The Montgomery Parks Activation (Events) Team is seeking an enthusiastic, passionate, and highly motivated person to fill our Special Events Supervisor position. The position will develop, implement, and manage special events and programming throughout parks in Montgomery County. The activation team executes a wide variety of signature, regional, and local events including festivals, concerts, performing arts series, comedy shows, and outdoor movies.

The successful candidate will have experience in event planning, organizing, and implementing unique programming, leading special events, community relations, marketing, and customer service. This position will partner with key stakeholders to build community relations and connections with Montgomery Parks.

Examples of Important Duties

  • Plans, implements, and manages major/high-level special events, cultural, and related events.
  • Hires, trains, schedules, evaluates, and supervises team of event specialists (full-time) and seasonal employees
  • Develops event budgets and estimates. Assists with developing and maintaining parks activation (events) budget
  • Develops and maintains partnerships with outside agencies and groups
  • Develops and maintains contacts with local and regional performers, artists, and organizations
  • Creates and manages events schedule in coordination with Event Operations Specialist
  • Coordinates permits, licenses, and event approvals
  • Recruits and selects contractors and performers for events.
  • Reviews bids, price quotes, and purchasing documents
  • Assist Departments Marketing staff in developing marketing strategies and materials for events and programs
  • Develops, conducts, and evaluates external and internal feedback on events and programming
  • Implements safety and emergency procedures for all events and activities; makes recommendations for improvements to procedures as warranted.

Important Skills and Characteristics 

  • Knowledge of industry standards, principals, trends, and practices of event management including but not limited to project management, artist booking, risk management, site procurement, communications, and vendor relations
  • Skill in planning and coordinating large scale events and festivals
  • Knowledge of special events equipment including tenting, sound, lights, staging, and event décor
  • Excellent customer service, verbal, and writing communications skills
  • Ability to be self-directed, yet excel in a team in environment and ability to build and maintain positive internal and external relationships
  • Proven ability to handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to think strategically, resourcefully, and be a skilled problem solver
  • Must have flexibility and willingness to work evenings and weekends, when required
  • Experience with Microsoft Office including, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Preferred Qualifications 

  1. Experience planning and executing large-scale festivals and events
  2. Considerable supervisory experience with professional full-time staff, support staff, and on-site event staff
  3. Significant experience managing committees, boards, and leading event programming efforts
  4. Bilingual/multi-lingual a plus

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation or related field, and four years of related experience, or

2. An equivalent combination of education and experience,

3. Valid Maryland driver’s license or the ability to acquire one.
