Summer 2025 Ecosystem Restoration Science Internship – Underwood & Associates

Description:

Underwood & Associates is seeking inquisitive, ambitious, and flexible undergraduate students or recent graduates to participate in our summer Science Internship program. The program is designed for young professionals to learn about the principles and practices of ecosystem restoration, and to gain hands-on experience with the process of scientific research. Interns will research aspects of stream-wetland restorations or constructed living shorelines, and address pertinent questions about the efficacy and outcomes of ecological restoration. The work that interns complete helps Underwood & Associates to expand our knowledge base of restoration science, deepen our understanding of the effects of restoration on ecosystems, and move us closer to answering important questions about our environment. An internship with Underwood & Associates offers opportunities for learning new scientific research skills, gaining experience in the restoration industry, and participating in rewarding work.

Qualifications:

Qualified applicants should possess an interest in and passion for any of the following fields: environmental science, ecosystem restoration, wetland science, hydrology, ecology, biology, botany, geographical science, or any similar field. Prior experience with the scientific process is not required. The internship experience entails designing and executing an independent scientific research project from start to finish. Projects and work may include fieldwork outdoors, laboratory work, and data synthesis. In addition to completing research projects, interns will also participate in regular company operations, such as ongoing monitoring and research, laboratory meetings, and outreach activities. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Literature review & research
  • Asking scientific questions & formation of hypotheses
  • Experimental & methodological design
  • Field work & data collection
  • Data analysis & interpretation
  • Presentation of findings & creation of a scientific report

Details:

While research projects will be primarily self-directed, interns will be mentored by the science team and also have the guidance of staff at Underwood & Associates during the experience. This is a paid position, and interns will be paid a weekly stipend for their work. The internship is a 12 week (3 months) long position that runs from the start of June to the end of August. Specific start and end dates are flexible and will be determined based on intern availability. The internship is based in Millersville, Maryland, but there are opportunities available for the intern to work remotely, if desired. Currently, housing is not able to be provided for interns.
