National Campaign Director, Work for Wellbeing Campaign

About the Job
There are 40 million unpaid caregivers in the U.S., and by 2060 the population of 65-year-olds in the U.S. will double. At the same time, automation and artificial intelligence are making it easier to produce the things we need with the work of fewer people, eliminating many traditional jobs in the process. To meet the growing need for caregiving and improve quality of life for everyone, we need to change the way we support caregiving.
It’s time to redefine work and provide support for the different ways Americans contribute to their communities that may not be captured by GDP or a bottom line. And we should start by valuing the work done by unpaid caregivers.
Many of us have loved ones with growing needs as they age, and see firsthand how aging and illness introduce a set of challenges that make it difficult for our loved ones to care for themselves. And we are not alone. Millions of Americans are figuring out how to address these challenges and help their loved ones live independent lives with dignity. Despite the value of their effort and sacrifices, this vital work isn’t valued much by the market or by the government.
We’re about to have more Americans in need of care than ever before. Now is the time to provide options to families that allow them to care for their loved ones in the way that’s best for them. One option we’re supporting is to allow family caregivers to qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, a cash benefit for working people that currently excludes family caregiving from the definition of “work.” Another option is the Child Tax Credit, recently expanded for one year by Congress to include virtually everyone caring for a child. We’ll be working to expand the Earned Income Tax Credit at the state and federal level, and to make the federal Child Tax Credit expansion permanent.
The Work for Wellbeing Campaign Director will be taking on one of the most important issues facing our society through research, media outreach, policy development, campaign organizing and coalition leadership. U.S. PIRG has helped shape the debate on the future of work, developing new policies with members of Congress such as Congresswoman Gwen Moore and Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman. With our state federation of organizations, we are leading the debate for state-level solutions for caregivers, such as in Illinois where we recently co-hosted an event with U.S. Senator Dick Durbin and state lawmakers. As the U.S. PIRG Work for Wellbeing Campaign Director you’ll exercise independent judgment and discretion to develop policy solutions and implement a variety of campaign strategies to mobilize the public and influence insiders.

Program development: Evaluate the research on the issue, create viable policy solutions and propose the right political strategy and messaging.
Advocacy: Take our policies directly to key decision-makers in regulatory agencies, the statehouse, in Congress or wherever important decisions are being made.
Campaign strategy: Assess opportunities for building political support for our agenda through coalition-building, grassroots organizing, media coverage and message development.
Media outreach: Serve as a chief spokesperson for our campaigns through tactics like media events, press releases and editorial board meetings.
Fundraising: Write grant proposals, build relationships with foundation staff and meet with major donors. Work with our citizen outreach staff to build and develop our membership base.
Staff recruitment and development: Recruit new staff and volunteers. Oversee program staff to develop and implement work plans; provide training and leadership development opportunities.
Candidates must have at least 3 years of relevant professional experience. Advanced degrees like a JD or a master’s degree are preferred, but not required. Qualified candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to citizen-based social change, as well as a track record of leadership, excellent judgement, discretion and significant project oversight. We’re looking for people who are goal-driven and results-oriented, who have excellent verbal, writing and analytical skills, the ability to speak persuasively in a charged atmosphere, and enthusiasm for the work. Experience with related policy issues and how Washington, D.C. or statehouses work is preferred.

Pay & Benefits:
Target annual compensation for this position is commensurate with the relevant professional experience and/or advanced degrees that a candidate has. U.S. PIRG offers a competitive benefits package.
