    Native Plant – Nursery Manager

Environmental Concern Inc. is a 501(c)3 public not-for-profit, that is dedicated to working with all aspects of wetlands. After more than 40 years of providing wetland services in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and beyond, we continue to broaden our partnership efforts. EC maintains the nation’s first wholesale native wetland plant nursery, established in 1972. In addition to operating as a wholesale nursery to the industry, the nursery is an integral part of EC’s education and research endeavors. Currently, EC cultivates approximately 120 wetland plant species that are native to the Northeast US and has the ability to propagate over 200 species. The nursery department produces 450,000 plugs of wetland plant species per year for habitat restoration projects throughout the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.
The nursery manager is responsible for all aspects of crop production and maintenance. Most species are produced from seed. In order to maintain diversity and purity of regional ecotypes, seed is collected by the nursery manager and nursery staff based on future production goals. Knowledge should extend to the basic processing, cleaning, storage and testing of seed. In addition, skill in the practices for sowing and germination of native wetland plants is highly desired.
Equipment operation skill is desirable as the nursery is equipped with tractors, skid steers and horticulture flat filler/ mixer. However, operational training can be provided if experience is lacking in an otherwise suitable candidate.
The nursery manager is responsible for directing staff in general nursery maintenance and production activities. Collaboration with the nursery salesperson and restoration team to produce, pull, and load requested orders are also essential duties.
The right candidate will be organized and will keep records required for tracking crop production, seed collection and planning raw material purchases. They will also be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions and will be able to carry and lift 50 lbs frequently during the completion of tasks. Willingness to work occasional evening and weekend hours when needed to complete assigned responsibilities may be expected.
