About You

My Background:

My background includes ecological research, teaching, and professional writing and editing. I have conducted extensive field work in both upland forest and wetland habitats, collected field data in various weather conditions, and statistically analyzed multiple data sets with both R and JMP. I am skilled in identifying vascular plants of Maryland.

My Work History:

While earning a Master of Science degree at Towson University, I taught biology laboratory for non-majors for 3 years, developed curriculum for the class BIOL 120L: Principles of Biology, and supervised meetings for teaching assistants. As a supervisor I explained new lesson plans to other TAs and helped new TAs prepare for teaching. I also worked as a teaching assistant for Mammalogy for 1 semester. In addition to teaching, I served for 2 semesters on the Towson University Curriculum Committee where I reviewed and approved proposals for either new classes or changes to existing classes.

Prior to my graduate school education, I worked for 2.5 years as an assistant editor for the weekly newspaper Dillsburg Banner and its sister publication Bargain Sheet, where I was able to report stories of a scientific nature to the general public and learn valuable writing and editing skills. I edited and proofread type, recommended story ideas, wrote stories, and took photographs. I also updated and maintained two websites for the business.

This writing background helped me earn a Sigma Xi Grant-in-Aid of Research in 2012. I have presented various research projects at the 2007 Pennsylvania Academy of Science meeting, the 2011 Maryland-Delaware Chapter of the Wildlife Society meeting, and the 2013 Meeting of the American Society of Mammalogists. I have also peer reviewed research for the Journal of Mammalogy.

My Interests:

I currently volunteer with Blue Water Baltimore, conducting stream surveys, urban forestry, and plant nursery assistance.
