About You

My Background: I was born in New Jersey but I grew up in Norway where I completed a MSc in Ecology at the University of Bergen. After 2 years with the U.S. Peace Corps and working 7 months for UNDP in the Solomon Islands, South Pacific, I decided to travel in the US where I ended up getting a job as a contractor with the NW Fisheries Science Center in Seattle doing salmon research in NE Oregon and Idaho rivers. That was in 2000 and now, several years later, I am still here in the US.

My Work History: Since 2000, most of my work has been with National Marine Fisheries Service or with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Serivice. In these positions, I evaluated a variety of projects affecting aquatic organisms and ecosystems, taking on increasing responsibilities of managing Endangered Species Act consultations of activities with larger and larger footprints. As such, I was involved in the National Marine Fisheries Service consultation with EPA on the re-registration of 36 pesticide active ingredients and, previous to this, on the Fish and Wildlife Service consultation with the Bureau of Reclamation on the operation of California water conveyance, diversions, and export facilities. I was also actively involved with conservation and restoration of aquatic habitat in N California where I built rapport and cooperated with state and Federal agency staff, consultants, and landowners to develop watershed management plans and restoration projects.

My Interests:  After 8 years of implementing Federal environmental regulations and policies, I decided to start a project, the Great Salmon Tour, to see "all the salmonid species in the world."  By originating the concept of the Great Salmon Tour, I have realized both a desire to explore salmonid diversity and to convey a message of how loss of species simultanously affects both biological diversity and the diversity of our common cultural heritage. I write about salmonid species and the people connected to them in blogs and online magazines, and hold lectures and presentations. Please feel free to contact me if you are interested in helping with the project or want a talk about my travels.
