About You

My Background:

My writing and activism began in childhood – they are stronger than ever today and based largely on issues in Frederick.  I have been involved in water issues for many years in great depth, both sourcing and water quality, and streams protections.  For two years I managed a Federal grant for emergency preparedness locally at Volunteer Frederick.

I have lived in Frederick City for eight years now – I made a conscious decision to live here and raise my family after fourteen years living in Baltimore – I have invested myself in local issues and politics while enjoying the many wonderful aspects of our community life.  The sense of close community appealed to me.  I preferred living and working close to home and spending more time with my young family.  I loved getting up each day and seeing those mountains on the horizon, it appealed to my Appalachian family background.

I believe that personal benefits accrue with shared responsibility and inputs into the community – I will build a spirit of community volunteerism and individual engagement by creating specific youth and senior corps to work on our community needs and quality of life – we will add our support to the local institutions that comprise these efforts today.  I will look to further engage Veterans groups in our emergency preparedness programs.

I truly believe that much of what I can accomplish is meant for the benefit of our youth and my children – their future community is in our hands – and I did not choose to live in Rockville, and I would not choose that for them – however, they may choose urban life if it suits their interests – but that is not what Frederick is destined to become under my watch.  That is my one overriding concern about the current direction of city planning.

My children have benefitted greatly attending our public charter school and I am a staunch defender of its benefits, while I grew up in regular public schools,

I have written for several years at frederickcitizen.com on planning and politics – also on http://www.airitoutwithgeorge.com  Except for bipartisan issues based elections at the county level, I’m a lifelong Democrat.

Long ago, as the Membership and Marketing director of the Maryland Restaurant Association, I undertook the research and development to create the state’s first self insurance worker’s compensation program for a trade association – today it remains a strong component of the industry.  I support small businesses as our retail backbone and community investors in people and multiple causes, they make our economy stronger.  Those dollars stay close to home and expand our tax base.

I have the technical ability to command databases and websites.  I have long supported the various community forums that allow local debate and criticism. The growing communal power of the web is a great opportunity for democracy and civic life.  I hope that more opportunity for civic broadband access will be realized and reasonable, and support Federal efforts in this regards.

I was an initial participant and on-going Board member of the Friends of Frederick County.  I could not be more proud to be one of the folks who supported progressive planning changes, a revised New Market Region Plan, and support for other localized efforts such as the Myers Farm annexation debate, Middletown gas compressor station site activism, electric line placement issues, and various zoning amendments and ordinances activism.  Frederick citizens share a community of broad interests and public participation that informs government at every level.
